Online Poker Guidebook » Poker’s Two Faces

Of course, loads of poker players, including yours truly, have gone from playing poker in strictly “live” poker rooms to playing over the Internet. This inclination is increasing at an amazing rate, but that in no way suggests those players opting for cyberplay are abandoning their traditional forums. After all, although the game of poker enjoyed in brick and mortar casinos and that conducted over the Net are, for all intents and purposes, the same, the two are still very unique in many ways. (We’ll cover those “ways” later.)

The Same Difference
The same is true for the reverse, meaning players who only started playing poker on the Internet and never even entered an actual poker room would be more likely to venture into one now. After all, he or she has learned how to play the game and clearly enjoys it, or they wouldn’t still be playing.

Regardless of how much poker purists and other anti-whatevers belittle online poker playing, the game is nevertheless currently undergoing revitalization unlike the game’s ever known. And all thanks to the World Wide Web. I, for one, personally think – correction “am totally convinced” – that what’s good for Internet poker is good for classic poker. Anti-online poker snobs may disagree fervently, but the odds that they too will one day succumb to the very real excitement of playing poker online are only going to increase.

With regards to strategic issues, there are two aspects which differ very much: the psychological side of playing online and the fiscal. Concerning the mental part, most people will tell you it is more difficult to get away with bluffing online than in a live game simply because opponents can ‘call’ by just clicking their mouse.

Real People Having Real Fun… Really!
An online player’s actions may vary considerably when playing in a real poker room with real people. For example, at a live table, the last thing a player wants is for other challengers to see them losing their cool when their game takes a downward turn. This is certainly the case when playing poker with friends; you’re more likely to maintain a certain degree of composure when the going gets rough. The physical nature of live-play intrinsically affects, for better or worse, the way we perform, as well as our capacity to focus.

In the virtual world where opponents do not see each other (although that too will change), pressures coming from other players are almost nil, but still exist to some degree (i.e. bet sizes). The result is, with online gaming certain facets such as body language and other physical strategies will decrease, while others, especially those pertaining to the actual card-playing, will further develop.

Out of Site, Out of Cash
The inherent qualities of online poker plainly make going broke that much simpler. With a greater tendency among players to become heated when gambling online, out of their opponents’ sights, even top poker players go bust. Internet poker is also played much faster, often involves higher stakes, and some players may play many of these high stakes games simultaneously. This obviously cannot be performed in a real casino. But probably the most significant difference between off and online poker playing is the fact that players at live poker tables typically appear with limited bankrolls. Conversely, online players can easily and instantly access further cash with a credit card and a few clicks of the mouse.
